On August 4, Lebanon was devastated by a massive explosion, the size of which is ranked third largest after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Over 170 people were killed, 6,000 thousand wounded, and hundreds more have been reported missing. The search for victims continues, and the death toll keeps rising. Adding to this tragedy, thousands of homes have been shattered and destroyed leaving 300,000 Lebanese displaced with no shelter. Lebanon had already been experiencing the biggest economic crisis in its history, an ongoing political crisis, and of course, COVID-19 like everywhere else in the world.
In an effort to respond to this, Austin bands Julie Slim & RendezVous, Indimaj, and Atlas Maior have banded together with the goal of raising funds for the Lebanese people with a livestream concert. All the proceeds of this concert will go to the Lebanese NGO, Beit El Baraka.
We are thankful for our partners so far: Texas Folklife, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the diverse cultures and living heritage of the Lone Star State, who is amplifying the event by helping us with marketing needs; Austin-Angers Sister City Committee, which is amplifying the event by airing our livestream during their event in France on the same day. We are very grateful for Nai Obeid, Graphic Designer, for donating her time and talents to designing our flyers and event pictures. We are very thankful for Pastor Ellen Williams at St John Lutheran Church for offering her beautiful sanctuary for the concert and for her technical help and support.
What else you can do: We are currently in need of fiscal sponsors to amplify the donations we raise through music. We would like to invite organizations and businesses to join us as sponsors by giving a one time generous donation at their earliest convenience. Sponsors can also help by matching the funds we raise by an 'x' factor that is sustainable for them. In return, we will include the logos on our flyers, in social media, and Julie Slim will personally credit their generosity during the livestream between each band.
Kindly place 'JS' before your name or the name of your organization, so that we can properly credit your donation to this fundraiser.
We hope you accept our offer to join us in helping my tiny and beautiful country rebuild and renew itself in the wake of this disaster.
